First edition 1907, Very large & heavy book.[Folio]. Rebound with maroon leather spine & corners, new front & rear papers. The front board has some faint white spots, also to the rear board bottom edge. There is a stain mark inside the front board plus former bookshop stamp. Dept. of Forestry cards opp. The large fold-out map at the back has a very small borer hole, but still in good condition. Inside the rear board is also a faint stain. The content is clean, pages still crisp, O/A in very good condition.

An impressive volume and a very useful handbook. A monument to Sim's industry and must have entailed a very great amount of work. The difficulties confronting Sim were therefore considerable, as they mostly are in pioneer work, and in the preparation of the work, the forests themselves, with their living trees, were preferred as sources of information. Sim's pioneer work is still highly regarded, and wrote with clarity, minute attention to detail and an eye for the picturesque. It remains the great classic on forest trees and is the basis of much that has since been written on the subject. It is extremely scarce and copies very seldom occur for sale.
