Concrete is a remarkable material. It is amazing that the simple and inexpensive mix of stone, sand, cement and water can do so much. It can produce objects that are robust and sturdy, but can also faithfully reproduce that most detailed and delicate patterns. It is ideal for a range of garden projects which, when properly made, are strong and durable. Concrete and mortar are site-made materials and require some knowledge, skill and care in their manufacture. But there is no reason why a do-it-yourself enthusiast should not be able to tackle any of the projects described in this book. It is hoped that the experience gained in successfully completing some of these projects will make you a concrete enthusiast, eager to attempt other more ambitious garden improvements. There is little that can match the satisfaction of using something that you have made yourself.
