Preface dated 1859. Published by R.E. King & Co. The true first edition was also published in 1859 by Chapman and Hall, this copy has no printing date except the preface date. This copy has 309pp + 32pp of advertising at the back. Maroon cloth hardback with gilt title on front cover.

Condition
All 4 corners of the covers has some rubbing, the edges has some shelf-wear, with wear to both head & foot of the spine. Both front & back hinges has broad tape to strengthen the binding, although there are no loose pages, but it does make the binding a bit shaky. Contains a former bookshop stamp opposide the half-title page. The content is still in very good condition.
