PREFACE Various accounts of the rising of 1745-6 have been written, in which the siege of Blair Castle has been noticed, but none give any full details of that event, and General Melville's narrative of the blockade, published in the "Scots Magazine" of 1808, only related the experience of the besieged. The remembrance of the '45, and the gallant struggle then made by a small army of undisciplined Highlanders is gradually becoming less vivid, and with the view of still preserving it, and throwing light on some matters hitherto not generally known, I have thought that the following pages, compiled from family papers and the official gazettes published at the time, together with a reprint of General Melville's narrative, might prove acceptable to my friends.
