An EXCELLENT example of a Large ( 53cm x 45cm ) Framed , Black & White Photograph of a Mounted Commissioned Officer of the Special Service Battalion. The Special Service Battalion (SSB) was formed in 1933 by order of the Minister of Defence & placed under the Command of Lt. Col George E. Brink.
The Battalion was organized on the basis of facilitating employment and training for unemployment Youth , who were unable to acquire a vocation or formal employment during the Great Depression. After a year of enlistment - many members found employment in Government Departments & The South African Railways - as well as - remaining within the Union Defence Force.
The remaining Servicemen that opted for contractual employment within the Union Defence Force- later formed the nucleus of the 11th SA Armoured Brigade & participated in the Italian Campaign of 1943/44.
