MAGNIFICENT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DESIGN

The impressive obverse is dominated by a central engraved portrait of Christopher Columbus, flanked by two allegorical female figures representing Geography and America.

The reverse carries the historic Spanish coat of arms, surrounded by elaborate geometric and ornamental engraving with large 100 / CIEN PESETAS denominations.

This is a substantial old banknote measuring approximately 145 × 90 mm, giving it excellent display presence.

HISTORICAL INTEREST

Dated January 1940, this banknote belongs to the opening period of Francos Spain and was issued only months after the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War, while Europe was entering World War II.

It is therefore an evocative survivor from an extraordinary period of 20th-century European history.

CONDITION

A heavily but genuinely circulated example showing strong folds, creasing, considerable age-related soiling and toning, edge wear and several edge splits/tears.

Despite its extensive circulation, the note remains highly recognisable, with the important Columbus portrait, serial numbers, inscriptions and major design elements clearly visible.
