The face features an exceptionally attractive engraved portrait of a young Algerian woman wearing traditional North African dress, accompanied by French and Arabic inscriptions.
The reverse presents a wonderfully detailed North African scene with two youths surrounded by prickly-pear cactus and palm vegetation, centred around the large 20 Francs denomination.
HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Dated 1941, this note was circulating in French Algeria during World War II, when North Africa was becoming strategically crucial to the course of the war.
It is therefore much more than an old banknote it is an authentic surviving piece of French colonial and WWII North African monetary history.
CONDITION
A genuinely circulated example showing strong folds and creasing, staining, toning, edge wear and small edge splits, consistent with extensive period circulation.
Despite its considerable use, the main design remains clearly visible and the attractive portrait and reverse artwork retain excellent historical character.
