ORIGIN: Colony of British Kenya

TOTAL : x 1

YEAR : 1950 -

TYPE : Seme / Simi Short Sword w/ Scabbard.

DIMENSIONS: Length - 61 cm

MANUFACTURER : Sing & Co. Nairobi, Kenya.

An EXCELLENT example of a 1950s Mau Mau Uprising Era , Kenyan Seme Sword with Rawhide Scabbard. This  piece appears to be in a well-preserved state, with minor age-related surface wear and still retaining a sharp cutting-edge. Wear is evident to rear portion of leather retention Scabbard.

Manufacturer marks are evident by Sing & Co. of Nairobi, Colony of Kenya - on Blade ricasso. The Seme short Sword has been utilised by the Kikuyu & Maasai ethnic groups of Kenya , as a symbol of authority - marking the transitional rite of passage from boyhood to warrior status. The Leaf-shaped spatulate form Blade is prepared with a severe cutting edge & is intended to function as a weapon & practical tool.

An item such as this, would have most likely formed part of the array of weaponry utilised by Mau Mau Insurgents during guerrilla Warfare. The Mau Mau Uprising (1952-1960) marked the end of British Colonial rule in Kenya , with mass arrests & Military operations conducted against insurgents. The conclusion of hostilities culminated in the transition to independence & majority rule.

The ideal addition to any 20th Century, Colonial British or Kenyan Tribal sharp-edged weaponry collection or display.
