1988 BARTOLOMEU DIAS 500TH ANNIVERSARY ONE RAND PROOF COIN
Issued by the South African Mint to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias voyage around the Cape of Good Hope (14881988). The reverse depicts a stylized map of Africa, a Portuguese caravel, a compass rose, and navigational symbols, celebrating one of the most significant voyages of the Age of Discovery. The obverse features the South African coat of arms and denomination.
