An EXCELLENT example of a RARE , 20th Century Italian Somaliland / Eritrean Gile Afar Tribal Dagger with Leather Scabbard. This piece remains in a well-preserved state, displaying appropriate signs of handling due to age and general usage. The Gile or Jile is a Large Dagger employed by Nomadic Warriors of various Tribal nations in the Horn of Africa region (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea etc ). This weapon is characterized by its distinctive curved double-edge blade and is exceptionally sharp.
The Gile has become a symbol of Tradition in modern times, having previously been employed during Warfare and Tribal disputes. Ornamentation such as the enlarged Brass Pommel & Copper wire chape - indicate social status and are considered symbols of virility.
