*** The Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Gift Box ***

King George V and Queen Mary's 17 year old daughter Princess Mary came up with the idea that all men and women wearing the Kings Uniform would get a "Gift From The Nation " called the "Sailors and Soldier's Christmas Fund" The men and women received the gift on Christmas day 1941. The Officers and soldiers received a box containing a pipe,lighter,1oz of tobacco and 20 cigarettes in yellow mamogramed wrappers. Non smokers and boys received bullet pencils and sweets instead and nurses were treated to Chocolate.

The tin is brass tin and is double-skined, it is 13cm long, 8.5 cm wide and 3cm deep. The surface

lid has the head of the Princess Mary in the center surrounded by a laurel wreath flanked on either side with the M mamogram. At the top it is inscribed Imperium Britannicum with a sword and scabbard on either side. At the bottom Christmas 1914 flanked by two bows of battle ships through water, also bearing the names of the Allies Belgum, Japan, Montenegro, Servia, France and Russia.

The tin has been kept alive with lots of polish as seen in scan, but could do with a Sterling polish job. Their is no pin so the lid is loose and can come off, scan also shows split on side, non-the- less a stunning item with huge history.
