History: The Trojan War (13-12th Century BC) is known through the epic poems of Homer - The Iliad & The Odyssey. Achilles was the strongest of the Greek warriors, the son of King Peleus of Phthia, and the Nereid Thetis. When still a baby, his mother Thetis, having consulted the oracles, dipped Achilles in the waters of the river Stigas, holding him by the heels, which resulted in Achilles' Heels being his only weak point. (Achilles Heel - signifying a weakness). During the Trojan War Achilles succeeded in killing Hector the son of King Priam of Troy. The scene on the plate is a depiction of Achilles dragging the body of Hector, holding Hectors helmet aloft in his right hand, around the walls of Troy according to Homer. This triumph has been captured by the German artist Franz Matsch and replicated almost identically by I. Spyropoulos on the plate. (The Greek army that is seen following Achilles has been omitted). An Amazing work of art.
