NOTE: Varnish is the final layer applied to all of my paintings, which is done to protect the painting from pollution in the atmosphere and/or any abrasion. Varnishing the painting also brings out the colours to the brilliance with which it was intended in the first place. The varnish also protects the painting from dirt, dust or any pollution, and evens out the final appearance and dramatically improves the clarity of the final product. In addition, UV rays, sunlight and fluorescent lighting can possibly change the pigment in paints, thus causing the painting to fade if it is not protected in some way or other.
I do hope that you will be pleased with some of the new work which I am presenting to you. As you would have noticed, my work is done on either normal hardboard, professionally covered canvas on board, or ‘ready to hang’ boxed canvas – the choice is yours entirely, to me it is immaterial, I enjoy working on any surface.
Inspiration? I get all the inspiration I need from visiting my forefathers land in the Langkloof. I do this pilgrimage at least once a year, and on every occasion I am truly awestricken and inspired by the beauty of this particular place in the sun. My eyes and brain starts working and taking in all the details the minute we hit the N2 from Port Elizabeth, all the way through those beautiful fruit orchards, the quaint villages, the friendly people we meet along the way, driving between the gorges of those huge mountains, the silent beauty of the rolling hills, all the colorful farm lands, the unusual and curious fauna and exquisite flora – oh, the beauty of those mountains are really something to behold – the beauty of that land one cannot describe, even just to do a painting of any one scene does NOT do the real thing any justice – it is beauty beyond words. Nevertheless I will keep on painting what I, at the end see in my mind. I would like to thank all Bid or Buy friends who support me in my inspiration, because without you how do I carry on doing what I love the most, that is, putting down in color what I see in my mind – you are truly the biggest inspiration for me, and I thank you most humbly for that, Jessie.
