Nansen believed it was possible to reach the geographic north pole utilising the natural east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. He designed and oversaw construction of a ship intended to be frozen into the pack ice, and resist the crushing pressure, while simultaneously drifting to his target. This was accomplished, but frustrated at the slow progress his vessel the Fram made using this method, after 18 months, he and Hjalmar Johansen embarked on a sled journey for the pole, not reaching it, but setting the record at the time for the most northerly penetration.

First English two-volume edition published 1897 by Archibald Constable and Company. Original blue-green cloth with gilt titles and vignettes depicting the two major events of the expedition, the Fram frozen into the ice, and on volume two, travel via dog sleigh. Both volumes suffer from splits and tears at the head and foot of the spines, and volume two has a circular cup stain on the front. Rough cut page edges, with minor foxing in places. Both volumes contain the recent name in ink of a previous owner on first endpapers. Volume one contains eight colour plates from Dr. Nansen's sketches, 48 full-page plates, and 47 illustrations within the text as called for, as well as two folding maps bound in at the rear. Of these, the General Map of the Polar Regions has a lengthy tear not affecting the content. All illustrations too are present in volume two, though the illustration within the text in page 513 is not per that listed. Both fold-out maps are present, with a short tear not affecting the content to the map showing the route of the  Fram.
