Nansen believed it was possible to reach the geographic north pole utilising the natural east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. He designed and oversaw construction of a ship intended to be frozen into the pack ice, and resist the crushing pressure, while simultaneously drifting to his target. This was accomplished, but frustrated at the slow progress his vessel the Fram made using this method, after 18 months, he and Hjalmar Johansen embarked on a sled journey for the pole, not reaching it, but setting the record at the time for the most northerly penetration.
