| DESCRIPTION | A lovely medium sized original oil painting of a WOMAN SINGING, viewed from the side. Painted by the listed and accomplished South African artist EDIN GODFREY CURRIE - WOOD (b 1914). The painting is done on artist board (fine treated canvass on hardboard) and it is still framed in the original 1970s wooden frame with thin gilded inner frame, separated by the typical canvass area. The artist has signed the artwork at top right and the artwork is not dated, but probably dates from the 1970s. The artwork measures 640 x 470 mm in the frame and the artwork alone measures 445 x 290 mm. You can see the painting as it is sold in the image above. | CONDITION | Both the artwork and frame are in good condition and it can be hung as is. I have left the painting framed in it's original frame because I do not believe in removing the original period frame from an artwork, even though there is some slight wear and nicking to the frame and the painting would look much better if re - framed in a bold dark frame. |
| This artwork is a nice investment piece. It was offered on auction by Stephan Welz & Co in Johannesburg on 30 July 2007 where it was catalogued as lot no 141 and given an estimate of R3000 - R5000. If interested in the artwork, please research the artist on the Internet where much information on him can be found. The artist is also listed on Artprice.com and Esme Berman has devoted pages 106 and 107 to him in 'Art and Artists of South Africa' (updated and enlarged edition of 1994) where two images of his works are shown. |
