Maracuja is the Portuguese and Spanish name for passion fruit, a tropical fruit known for its aromatic, tangy pulp and edible seeds.

Granadilla Ester is a vigorous climber with striking purple fruit, this cultivar was discovered in 1995 by JC Esterhuysen near Polokwane. Bred for high yields, sweet-tangy pulp, and year-round fruiting.

🍈 Fruit: Tough purple skin with orange-yellow pulp

🌼 Flowers: Large, fragrant, and bee-attractinggreat for biodiversity

🌞 Sun & soil: Full sun, well-draining soil, and a sturdy trellis or near a fence

💧 Watering: Consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting

📅 Harvest: First fruit within 6 months; peak from late December to January

🌿 Growth: Fast-growing climber; prune to manage shape and airflow

🌿 Sow: 1/2 inch / 1.27cm deep in seed trays. This depth allows the seeds to establish a strong root system before they are transplanted to the garden. Properly planting seeds at the correct depth is crucial for the successful germination and growth of a granadilla plant.

The first job in planting is to identify the perfect spot for your passionfruit. As they have deep root systems, the soil should be loose and well-draining and in a spot with full sun for the strongest growth and best fruits. In hotter climates, they may also benefit from light afternoon shade to prevent scorching. Amend the soil with compost and a handful of bonemeal deep in the planting hole to improve soil conditions.

Its best to keep them away from nearby plants or trees as they can compete for resources and quickly take over. Keep them in an isolated position close to a fence or trellis to provide support. As the vines can grow well over 4m long, the supports should be tall and strong enough to hold the weight of the fruits.

If you have a large enough pot and sturdy support, granadillas can also be grown in containers. This also helps keep the vines contained, great for smaller gardens with little space for outdoor planting.

Cultural history:

Granadillas originate from South America, specifically from regions in Paraguay, Brazil, and northern Argentina. They are also known as passion fruits and are cultivated in various tropical regions around the world.
