JOHANNES MEINTJES - MAGGIE LAUBSER (PUBLISHED IN 1944)

RARE AFRICANA: THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THIS HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER PUBLICATION SELDOM PRESENTS ITSELF!

SOLD FOR R23,775 BY ANTIQUARIAN AUCTIONS (LOT 261) ON 24 NOVEMBER 2016

First edition (1944); 47pp. HAUM, Cape Town & Pretoria.

Format (size) : 330 x 250 mm

This book is a monograph on the life and work of South African artist Maggie Laubser (1886-1973), written by Johannes Meintjes at the age of 21. It was written shortly after Johannes Meintjes had become acquainted with Maggie Laubser's work in the early 1940s and they had become friends.

An extremely scarce copy of Meintjes' superb monograph on Laubser's development as an artist, with notes on her influences, such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, etc and the particular influence of the South African lifestyle on her work. Written in Afrikaans; 47 pp and 30 illustrations.

This publication is most certainly one of Meintjes' rarest books and, having been sold for R11,200 at Stephan Welz & Co on 5 October 2010, it holds the record for the highest price paid for any book by Johannes Meintjes on public auction at the time. This record subsequently went even higher, with a copy being sold for R23,775 by Antiquarian Auctions on 24 November 2016.

Very rare and highly sought-after Africana in acceptable condition considering the publication date of 1944 : some 70+ years ago. The dust jacket is a facsimile copy of the restored original dustjacket and in mint condition. As can be expected, the book itself certainly has signs of age-related wear (especially the outer, hard cover), some stains and minor foxing throughout. (Please enquire if you require more information and/or photographs).

Johannes Meintjes was a painter that enjoyed tremendous public support for his art since early age and also received international acclaim as an author later on.The fame he enjoyed as a 21 year old artist is unequalled in the South African history of art.

Meintjes died in 1980 and had established himself as a major South African painter and writer. He had painted more than a thousand canvases, produced dozens of sculptures and exhibited in all South Africa's major galleries. Apart from numerous articles and smaller literary works, he had published 35 books, amongst them internationally authoritative works on South African history.

The correct spelling of his surname is 'Johannes Meintjes' (and not 'Johannes Meintjies')

Some of Meintjes' books are of historical GLBT interest as they are considered to be early examples of South African gay writing.
