The true British first edition with the rare ORIGINAL dust jacket ( not a facsimile ). And thus at an excellent price, and an excellent rand hedge investment. Dust jacket is not price clipped and states " 8s6d." . Original pink endpapers. Both book and dust jacket are very good. Both book and jacket are the first edition first impressions. There are some signs of light foxing on the leaves and edges, as well as the back of the dust jacket. The dust jacket has minor rubbing on the edges and corners but no tears or chips. There is a small black mark on the spine of the dust jacket, but overall this is still in very good condition. . Photographed as protected in mylar. Small neat shop label inside front board ( Vanity Fair of Johannesburg ). Original 8/6 price in pencil on the endpaper but otherwise no writing. This is the rare complete British first edition of one of the absolutely essential books of the 20th century and a beacon of "protest" literature. It also stands on its own as a good yarn and features on most top 100 lists of books to read before you die. The dust jacket features the breathless BBC rave review in full and you can imagine the British public rushing out to buy the latest American hit before the drama of the Second World War finally usurped the moral uncertainty of the lingering Great Depression.
