 EAGLE & EASTWOOD POTTERIES OF
J & G MEAKIN
IN STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND

The story of J & G Meakin begins with James Meakin born in 1807.  In 1850 along with John proctor he formed at pottery at Shelton in Staffordshire. The business quickly grew and moved to Lane End in Longton. Unfortunately James Meakin suffered from ill health and died in 1852 at only 45 year old.
The pottery was taken over by two of his sons James Jnr. and George, establishing the business at Lane End. James was the potter and ran production whist his brother George was a salesman and traveller. The partnership was very successful and in 1859 they moved to a purpose built pottery called the Eagle Works in Hanley.

Another, younger son, Alfred, had already established his own pottery at the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate potteries in Tunstall, to be known as Alfred Meakin Ltd and lately as Myott Meakin.

A further son Charles was also a potter and in  1888 James and George took over his business, and along with it, the also newly built Eastwood works situated on the Cauldon Canal at Lichfield Street in Hanley.

Now well established in two efficient factories, the business became a Limited Company in 1890, and so the Company of J & G Meakin Ltd. began its 100 year history
