Flexing the metal disc in the liquid creates a chain reaction causing the pad to crystallize.
It will use this energy to increase the temperature of the pad to approx 60c and use whatever is left to maintain that temperature. All of the liquid does not crystallize at once so this is what enables the pack to produce the heat for a length of time. Molecules that were not required to heat the pad to its maximum temperature will remain liquid, and crystallize as required, to maintain the maximum temperature.
Once the pad has given off all of its heat, it will harden. When you want to re-use the pack just place it into a pot of boiling water for 5 odd minutes until all of the crystals are melted. Make sure that you put a cloth on the bottom of the saucepan before you boil it, to avoid damage to the outer packaging. Once completely liquified, remove the pack from the water, wipe it dry and place it in the box again until it is needed next. The pad should remain liquid as it cools. If crystals form as the pad cools it has not been boiled long enough. Place the pad in boiling water again until all the crystals have dissolved and the pad is completely clear.
The pad will be very hot for the first 30 minutes or so, depending on size, and then will gradually cool down.

A heat pad that heats to a safe preset temperature and is completely reusable. INSTRUCTIONS
To activate:
1. Flex metal disc back and forth until crystals form.
2. Knead pad to soften.
To recharge:
1. Boil water in a pot.
2. Place a chux cloth on bottom of pot.
3. Place bag on cloth inside the pot, and continue to boil water until all crystals are dissolved, and bag is completely clear.
4. When bag is completely clear take it out of the water and place on a cloth to cool down.
Completely clear means completely clear. If even one tiny little crystal is left, the liquid will quickly re-solidify. Hold the pad up to the light and make sure there are no crystals. If there is even one tiny little crystal, continue to boil until it melts.
5. When the bag cools down, it is ready to be used again.
6. If crystals start forming while the bag is cooling, repeat steps 1, 2 and 3.
