REVIEW
Maru tells the story of the well-educated Margaret Cadmore, a descendent of the San People, but raised by an English missionary - also called Margaret - following the death of her mother. Margared Cadmore finds it difficult to fit in anywhere: "...unlike other children, she was never able to say: "I am this or that. My parents are this or that. There was on one in later life who did not hesitate to tell her that she was a Bushman, mixed breed, half breed, low breed or bastard. Then they were thrown into confusion when she opened her mouth to speak." However, instead of this making her weaker, it strengthens her belief in herself and her pride in her roots.
