Mother Of Majesties – about

I wrote this song for my own mother for her, 50th birthday, with a purpose to open up my feelings for her, as I was increasingly aware that this was not one of my strong points using the ordinary set of conversation tools. Realizing that it is, in fact, so difficult for many people to share what their feelings are toward their mothers, I decided to take a chance by publicizing the idea, in the hope that people may use it as a means to “say what they want to say” without feeling ashamed. After all, just about everybody loves their mother, but far fewer seem to hold the capacity to voice their emotions toward her.

And what better time to reflect on this, than on the one special day a year chosen for our mothers?

On a broader level, my music is almost always birthed out of a message about the value of relationship (bound by love) and the honesty that needs to be contained within that relationship for it to remain a success. At the heart of all brokenness, I believe, lies a strongly manifested form of mistrust, born out of fear of vulnerability and restriction of individualism. My message is one of restoration, resolution and humility. It is also my prayer.

Composer Biography

Jane studied at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town, under Jack De Wet, Jurgen Schwietering, Farida Bacharova, Peter Klatzow and Hendrik Hofmeyr. She graduated with distinction in both performance and composition. She is also a fully qualified Audio Engineer and uses a multitude of her skills to produce an eclectic and original musical style. Jane has been awarded many prizes for composition throughout her school years, and at UCT, she received the Meyer Levinson Award for most original composition.

Jane is currently a free-lance musician, acting as a violinist and violist. She has worked with the majority of musicians in Cape Town, and is a part time member of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Being a master of two instruments, she is required in chamber groups, shows, rock concerts, recitals and orchestras of all genres. In 2011, she wrote a work for the well-known international movement “Quartet Of Peace”, which toured South Africa with Jane as a member of the quartet. The piece was dedicated to Robert Sobukwe, after being inspired by a day trip to Robben Island. Jane has also written music for short films and is working towards a career in film scoring and music for multimedia.
