              ***OLD HAND MADE SHORT SWORD***

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION PROPERLY AND STUDY THE PHOTOGRAPHS BEFORE PLACING A BID.

A few  years ago I came across this old short sword in a secondhand shop here in KwaZulu Natal. The shopkeeper could not tell me much except that he had purchased a batch of stuff from a deceased estate and that the sword was amongst this items he received.

I will try and explain the sword to the best of my ability, but please note that I am no expert on blades and swords.

The sword is 44cm long. The blade is 32cm long and 3.5cm wide. The handle appears to be made from bone, but has been coated with some sort of resin or varnish for protection in recent times. It appears as if tortoise shell has been placed where the blade goes into the handle. The sheath has been made from what looks like leather to me and is inlaid with fragments of bone or ivory. On both sides of the blade there are patterns and Arabic writing.

A while back I went and consulted an Arab gentleman who is fluent in speaking and reading the Arabic language and asked him to read what is inscribed on the blade. According to him, the year 129 of the Muslim calendar is written on the blade, which I unfortunately cannot point out. He also told me that the Muslim calendar is ¿700 years behind our calendar, thus the date would be refering to a date ¿ 1178 years ago. Now I am almost sure that this sword does not date from that time, but the year must have some or other significance.

Please understand that I cannot guarantee any of the information given, and have merely stated it as a matter of interest. I futhermore have no idea how old the sword can be.

Signed for postage in South Africa will be R25.
