From ghost-town to dream village - that is the story behind Orania.

When the Department of Water Affairs embarked on the building of the Vanderkloof dam, they found it necessary to build a village to accommodate their labour force. In 1963, the village came to be built halfway between Hopetown and Petrusville on the banks of the Orange River. The local engineer, Norman Landsdell, organised a competition for the selection of a suitable name, and Orania came out on top.
Twenty years later when the work had been completed the Water Affairs labour force moved elsewhere. The village slowly deteriorated, the houses became derelict shells in overgrown gardens.

In 1990 the government decided to sell what remained of the village as a single entity. Members of Afstig (the Afrikaner Freedom Movement) saw the advertisement in Landbouweekblad and decided to tender. Not long afterwards Orania was bought by the newly developed Orania Bestuursdienste (OBD) for R1,5 million.
On 11 April 1991 Orania was officially opened. Houses were offered for sale at prices between R31,000 and R41,000.
Today, ten years later, Orania is a flourishing little town. The houses have been repaired and the gardens have been tidied up. Various undertakings have come into being. The community has come alive again.

Orania is in the Northern Cape Province, 164 kilometers from Kimberley and 200 kilometers from Bloemfontein.

WHAT IS ORANIA?

Orania is replying to the question of the right of existence the Afrikaner is facing towards the end of the twentieth century.
Without denying that new problems hold new possibilities, and that Afrikaners are coming forth with many creative answers, the question that needs more clarification could be something like: Why do Afrikaners find themselves in such a helpless position and what can be done about it.
Power relationships have shifted irretrievably from a powerful white minority in a closed-race dispensation to black majority control in an open, united and indivisible political and economical dispensation. In practise it boils down to a power-shift from a dominant white party to a dominant black party, for despite the fact that South Africa can ethnically be described as a country of minorities, the ANC alliance has managed to unite two thirds of voter support towards itself, and there is no sign of any change in the offing.

THE MONETARY SISTEM

After numerous town meetings the local Architect was contracted to design the new currency. His artistic design with the notes was unanimously accepted with pride. The monetary system was officially launched on Thursday the 29th of April 2004
