ORIGINAL WWII RAAF ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE PILOTS FLAT EMBROIDERED WINGS
Scarce original Second World War Royal Australian Air Force Pilots Qualification Wing, dating from the King George VI period, circa 19391945.
A particularly attractive flat embroidered example, manufactured on black cloth and featuring finely worked full pilot wings flanking the central RAAF monogram. Above is the distinctive Kings/Tudor Crown, while the RAAF lettering is surrounded by the characteristic embroidered wreath.
The flat construction is an important variation of the WWII RAAF pilot brevet. Period RAAF wings were produced in several forms and locationsincluding Australia and Britainwith both padded and flat embroidered examples known. Specialist references specifically document an English-made flat RAAF pilot wing on black backing.Â
The Australian War Memorial confirms that wartime RAAF pilot brevets used the Kings Crown, RAAF lettering, wreath and full wings, with documented examples dating approximately 19421945.Â
Your example shows attractive age and genuine period character, with strong raised embroidery and some expected wear/fraying to the black cloth perimeter. I would leave it exactly as it isdo not trim or attempt to tidy the backing.
