It is the large, powerful engine and the "slippery", light-weight design that give muscle cars their name. Chevrolet became a top muscle car manufacturer with models like Corvette, Nova SS and the Chevelle.  When Chevy introduced the Chevelle in the early '60s, no one dreamed of the sensation that it would eventually become.  By 1970, the standout was the high-powered Chevelle SS 454, at one time called "The Meanest Muscle Car Ever Built."
