MODERN COOKERY ILLUSTRATED by Lydia Chatterton
PUB: ODMANS PRESS, LONDON ; reprint 1946 A scarce title.
225 x 150mm wide, 640 pgs. A heavy book. Has a number of illustrations which include: Gas in the Kitchen (see below), Electric coffee percolator, Carving joints, Carving Leg of Mutton,The Best Grater for Cheese, Skinning a Rabbit, Coconut Sponge Puddings.
No internal inscriptions (most cook books have some pencilled additions - none here that I could see). Internally the book is clean. Binding soft - no loose pages but is begining to pull away from the spine right at the back - at the index (this can be repaired with a little woodglue). The dj is poor. Although it looks OK in the photo the front sleave is missing so the front is loose. Cloth cover in good condition. slightly bumped and soiled with a small tear at the top of the spine.
Overall a vg reading copy of a scarce title. For those that collect cookery books from yesteryear, this will make a great addition. For those just interested in cooking and who try and get those old recipes, well this covers what to do with stale bread and milk to cooking eels to potatoes with lemon to rice pudding with strawberry meringue.
