An EXCELLENT example of a 1872 National Rifle Association Silver Medal awarded to Trooper J Ridley of the Royal Maritzburg Rifles (R.M.R). This piece appears to be in a well-preserved state, with Graphic Design Relief complete for both obverse & reverse. Recipient Name & Details are evident on Medallion Rim.
The Maritzburg Rifles, were raised in 1861 and acquired their namesake in 1868. This Unit was tasked with defending Pietermaritzburg, but did not see any action during the Anglo-Zulu War. The volunteers did , however, act as Guard of Honour to the funeral procession of the Prince Imperial of France in 1879 - en route to Durban.
