SCARCE 1962 SOUTH AFRICA 50 CENTS LARGE .500 SILVER SPRINGBOK CROWN
Description
An attractive and increasingly sought-after 1962 South African 50-cent silver crown, issued during the Republics first decimal coinage series.
The obverse features a finely detailed portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, surrounded by the bilingual motto EENDRAG MAAK MAG UNITY IS STRENGTH. The reverse displays Coert Steynbergs iconic leaping Springbok, the date 1962, denomination and bilingual country name.
With a reported business-strike mintage of only 15,000 coins, the 1962 is considerably scarcer than the common dates in this short 19611964 silver series.
Specifications:
The photographed coin retains strong portrait and Springbok detail with attractive silver brilliance. Numerous surface hairlines, handling marks and signs of earlier cleaning are visible; it should therefore be offered as a high-detail circulated/cleaned example, not as UNC or proof.
