An EXCELLENT example of a RARE, British Pattern 1903 Sanderson Sword Bayonet with Leather Scabbard & Integral Frog. This short-lived Pattern of Bayonet was approved in November 1902 for use with the Mk1 III Lee-Enfield (SMLE) Bolt-action Rifle; and is considered amongst the most sought after and scarce types of British Military Bayonets. The P1903 featured the same Blade as the P1888 Sword Bayonet , however, it had an improved pommel , grips & new crosspiece for attachment to the SMLE Bayonet plug. This example characterizes a typical 1901 dated, P1888 conversion to the Pattern 1903 standard , having undergone necessary alteration at the Rifle Factory Ishapore, India (RFI) in 1904. The P1903 was found to have insufficient reach for dismounting Cavalry during review trials , and was hastily replaced with the iconic longer Pattern 1907 Sword Bayonet.
The Leather Scabbard with integral suspension frog was introduced in 1903 , and made provision for the removal of the retention boss associated with the MKI variety. This piece appears to be a 1917 - Dated reissue Scabbard, and more than likely would have been issued to British Indian Army & other Colonial Forces during World War I (1914-18).
An ideal addition to any RARE , British Military Bayonet collection or display- for the enthusiast seeking a well preserved period piece for their assortment.
