An EXCELLENT example of a Rare, World War 1 German East Africa Schütztruppe kS98 - S84/98 Conversion Bayonet with Steel Scabbard. This piece appears to be in a well-preserved state, with the Steel Blade & Scabbard remaining intact and bearing matching Imperial Fraktur Inspection Stamps. Age-related and handling marks are evident due to field usage.
The Bayonet retains the characteristic Composite Unvulcanised Rubber Grip Scales, fastened with the 1913 pattern screw-bolts. This configuration was introduced in 1914 , for use by the Schütztruppe stationed in German East Africa (Burundi, Rwanda, Cameroon) - in order to prevent the rotting experienced with wood and leather grip scales in the humid conditions.
This piece has been subject to conversion from a kS98 pattern Bayonet to a model resembling the S84/98 - having been manufactured at the Erfurt Royal Prussian Army Works in Thüringia.
The ideal addition to any First World War, Colonial German Schütztruppe Bayonet collection or display.
