H.M.S.BANFF - one of the numerous ex- U.S. Coastguard ships transferred to the Royal Navy in 1941 as part of the 'lend/lease' agreement.
Built as the SARANAC at Oakland, California, being launched in April 1930.

armed: on transfer with: 1 x 5in, 3 x 12pdr guns

On transfer, the American ships were renamed, being given the names of Coastguard stations in the UK.
H.M.S. BANFF was turned over to the British at New York in April 1941
Career: to UK in May 1941; refitted in London Docks with British equipment
August 1941 entered service, being based at Londonderry with the Sloop Division;November 1941 -
transferred to the 44th Escort Group, still at Londonderry
Escorted convoys from 'Derry to Sierra Leone and return between Aug. 1941 and Sep'1942.
Nov. 1942 to Feb '1943 escorting convoys from 'Derry to Algiers and back
May '1943 to August '1943 escorted two Atlantic convoys to Canada and back
October '1943 deployed to the Indian Ocean, travelling via Gibraltar and the Suez Canal.
From Nov '43 based at Kilindini, east Africa
Dec '43 to Jan '45 employed escorting convoys along east African coast, from Durban to Aden
August 15th 1945 At Durban for VJ Day celebrations.
December 1945 - returned UK and paid off
January 1946 ship returned to U.S. control and re-commissioned in the US Coastguard as Saranac
