A rare WW1 Erfurt KS98 saw-back bayonet issued to the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe (German Imperial Colonial Troops) in German South West Africa (GSWA). A number of these bayonets were brought back to South Africa by SA Union Defense Force soldiers as souvenirs after the GSWA campaign of 1914-1915. This example has the leather grips, unique saw-back blade and iconic eagle's head handle. It bears all the correct markings as follows :
To the hilt and scabbard : matching unique number K.S. 9613
To the ricasso : "ERFURT" below the imperial crown
To the blade spine : date stamp "W/09" (1909) with imperial crown and the Kaiser, Wilhelm II monogram.
Overall condition is good with light tarnishing and wear. The locking mechanism is functional. The metal scabbard bears some denting with the frog hook fully intact. All numbers and stamps are clear with the bayonet inserting and withdrawing smoothly. Please see thumbnail images above for more detail.
Length (bayonet) : 38cm
Length (blade) : 25cm
Length (in scabbard) : 39.5cm
