Indicolite belongs to the Tourmaline family of gemstones.  A most colorful group Tourmaline comprises green, red, blue, yellow, colorless, black and sometimes they come in two or more colors at once.

The best known Tourmalines are green followed by pink then red Rubellite. By contrast a Tourmaline which is pure blue is a rare thing indeed. Blue Tourmaline or Indicolite as they are now known are held in extremely high esteem by collectors not only for their rareity but for their wonderful lustre, beauty and clarity.

They originate mostly in the north of Brazil where magnificent Paraiba Tourmalines were also discovered.  There are also findings in Namibia and Nigeria.

Indicolite and Turquoise color Paraiba Tourmaline are the most well respected and sought after and thus most expensive Tourmalines.
