This magnificent antique (1839) leather-top buffet cabinet off the British - South African "MV Carnarvon Castle" ship is an amazingly rare find. The cabinet still has the original installation/ instruction sticker on the back which confirms that the cabinet was to be installed in the 1st-class dining saloon and confirms the date as 1839 and has "For Ship - Mr. Edward, Please see the unit gets the utmost care" written on the back. The Carnarvon Castle was in operation from 1926 until it was scrapped in 1963. The ship underwent a re-fit in 1838/1839 where this cabinet was installed and in 1943 it was planned for the ship to be converted into a aircraft carrier which was abandoned in favour if it becoming a troopship. The cabinet is a two-drawer, two cupboard cabinet and measures 123cm long x 55cm wide x 91cm high. Please view the pics carefully as we have left the cabinet in its original antique condition. Please view the pics carefully to fully appreciate this remarkable cabinet and to confirm the condition.
Please see the attached link as well as the pictures at the end of the listing which show the 1st class dining saloon in its day, as well as a pic of the the ship and the dining menu which I found on the internet.
