This 1985 South African 1 Rand is a silver-struck example originating from a proof set release, however it is no longer in proof condition. The coin has been removed from its original set and shows circulation or handling marks, and is therefore not offered as a proof coin.

While standard 1985 R1 circulation coins were issued in nickel, silver versions were struck specifically for collector sets. Once removed and handled, these coins trade primarily on silver content rather than proof status, which is how this example is correctly presented.

The reverse features the South African coat of arms with crossed maces and shield, while the obverse shows the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town, commemorating South Africas parliamentary history.

This coin retains real intrinsic silver value due to its Silver (.800) composition and remains a legitimate silver Rand, just not a premium proof example.
