This is a vintage South African 10 Rand banknote (van Riebeeck large type).Â
The note is from the first issue of the rand currency, which replaced the South African pound in 1961.Â
It features a portrait that was for a long time mistakenly thought to be Jan van Riebeeck, but is actually of the Dutch officer Bartholomeus Vermuyden.Â
The reverse side (not pictured) features a sailing ship at sea.Â
The rand takes its name from the Witwatersrand, the ridge where most of South Africa's gold deposits were found.Â
