"THE HISTORICAL MONUMENTS OF SOUTH AFRICA"
(1972)

This comprehensive work was published by
THE REMBRANDT VAN RIJN FOUNDATION FOR CULTURE
at the request of THE NATIONAL MONUMENTS COUNCIL
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, 1972.

The author, J J Oberholster, was Professor of History at the
University of the Orange Free State.

It is an outstanding collectible book with a detailed list of all
historical monuments of South Africa at the time of the publication in 1972.

It is in effect a detailed summary richly illustrated of the history of South Africa
beginning in 1652 up until 1972.

This is a large and heavy book of 354 pages and weighing 1.7 kg.
It measures 29 x 21 cm and it is 3.5 cm thick.

The hardcover is in very good condition and the dust jacket is good to very good with
some slight wear to the edges. The binding is very good and the pages almost as new with no marks or foxing.

Printed on good quality heavy matt paper, it is richly illustrated in black and white and it contains
12 colour plates and a host of drawings and pictures. The frontispiece is Wouter Schouten's 1668 depiction
of the fort (it runs around to the back).

The book covers 215 historical monuments in the then Cape Province, 62 in Natal,
25 in the Orange Free State and 65 in the Transvaal for a total  of the 367.

It has the previous owner's name crossed out on the first inside page.

Please note, the pictures form part of the description and the two colour plates I have included
are only to give an indication of the top-class quality of this book.

Below is a print of of "A Boer Wagon" by T W Bowler, circa 1845.

"Durban from the Berea", also by T W Bowler, circa 1847.
