A reproduction of one of Baines's paintings is pasted on to the jacket. The dust jacket has minor tears which were tape repaired. Illustrated by a selection of Thomas Baines's water-colours, drawings and prints, with captions and introduction by F. R. Bradlow. There are many monochrome illustrations and a map in the text. 

Professor J P R Wallis, some of whose books were published in the Oppenheimer series, was the leading authority on the explorer and painter Thomas Baines, about whom little was known before Wallis began his research.
