Temperature Treated Bulbs: The Terrific Tulip
There are some bulbs that gardeners tend to shy away from planting. This is often because they are perceived as being tricky to grow. The elegant and stately tulip is often one of these misrepresented bulbs. Although the tulip is not native to South Africa, there are varieties of this lovely bulb that are very successfully grown in our country, such as the large-bloomed Darwin Hybrids. Bulb producers can also temperature treat these wonderful hybrids so that success is practically guaranteed when you plant tulips. By giving tulips a cold treatment before planting time the results you see are remarkable. These bulbs will produce large, show-size flowers and bloom on tall and strong stems. Perfect!
The process of temperature treating is determined by the flowering cycle of the bulb. The bulb’s cycle consists of periods of wakefulness and rest, which is governed by the seasons. To achieve the best results from bulbs it is always best to mimic the environment in which they grow naturally. Tulips are dormant through the hot summer months and awake with the arrival of cooler temperatures and life-giving rain. To mimic this life cycle, during their dormant periods the bulbs are lifted and stored in rooms with carefully monitored temperature and humidity. The temperature is first raised to 24ºC to imitate summer, and is then dropped to 5ºC. If you control the temperature that surrounds the bulb it can be tricked into flowering earlier. When you plant the bulb in May the soil temperature, although still relatively low, is warmer than 5ºC. So the bulb behaves as if spring has arrived and it will grow more vigorously than untreated bulbs. Treated tulip bulbs will tolerate sunny conditions and will enjoy a position of semi-shade in your garden.
As soon as the treated bulbs are removed from the cool conditions of storage they begin to grow. As a result, treated bulbs must be planted within 10 days after receipt.
As with all your bulbs, don't forget the Three F's: Water your bulbs for Forty minutes, with a sprinkler, every Four days and don’t Forget.
