You are bidding on an Ultra Rare 1820 British East India Company 22ct Gold coin recovered from the shipwreck Fame.
These coins are very much part of South African history as they were used here when the Cape
was the half way stop on the trade route between Europe and the far east.
Mohur, 1768-1832, gold, British East India Company, Proclamation coinage, India, Bengal presidency.
It is certified that this coin was recovered in October 1965 from the wreck of the English sailing ship "Fame" a 629 ton ship, captained by Mr. Clark. It was blown onto the rocks as it was leaving the harbour at Sea Point, Table Bay, on the night of the 14th June 1822
As soon as these coins were circulated they seemed to have disappeared, it is thought that they were melted down and possibly taken away by visiting sailors from that period of our history, as the East was being developed as a trading destination at that time. The (E.E.I.C) ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY (established,on 31 December 1600) was one of the more prolific users of this route around the tip of Africa to reach India.
The First British Occupation (1795 - 1803)
The British occupied the Cape in 1795. To alleviate a serious shortage of coins, they introduced coins from St. Salvador and St. Helena . Amongst these coins were half Johannas, Spanish dollars, ducats, sequins, mohurs, guilders, shillings and copper pennies.
These coins were used at the time of the English occupation of the Cape Colony, with the passing shipping trade on routes to India and China.
