The seminal work on a major artist in Indonesia, the Dutch-born artist Arie Smit first arrived in Batavia in 1938 prior to moving to Bali which consumed the remainder of his life. This special, limited, artist-signed and numbered book, is a richly illustrated hommage to the eldest and last generation of foreign (Dutch) painters working in pre- and past world war Bali, who, amongst others, founded the "Young Artists" (on Bali); following the inspiration established by Walter Spies, Willem G. Hofker, Rudolf Bonnet, Auke Sonnega, Theo Meier, Mario Blanco (et.al.) offers a comprehensive view of the artist's vibrant life and career which inspired several generations of young Balinese artists, who have gone on to form important style movements. A must for every collector and devotee to foreign painting in the Dutch East Indies/Indonesia.
This lavishly illustrated book is the official, comprehensive, aspiring, fresh restrospect of a Dutch-born Indonesian painter Arie Smit, his life, artistic career and œuvre as an artist.
Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, in 1916, Arie Smit is known today as one of the most outstanding painters of Bali. First arriving in Batavia, the capital city of the Netherlands Indies in 1938, by 1956, upon the invitation of important artists like Auke Sonnega and Rudolf Bonnet, Arie Smit traveled to Bali. What was intended as a brief sojourn to the Island of the Gods has consumed the remainder of the artist's life.
This book intends to offer a comprehensive view of the artist's vibrant life and career, which commenced well before he arrived in Bali. Arie has inspired several generations of young Balinese artists, who have gone on to form important style movements. It was produced in consultation with the artist, who cooperated fully in its creation.
