The Winterschlacht Im Osten Medaille / Winter Battle in The East Medal was instituted by Adolf Hitler on 26 May 1942 for service in the Soviet Union following the 1941 invasion known as Operation Barbarossa. Qualification for the award dictated that the recipient had to have completed 14 days in active combat , 30 air combat sorties, 60 days continuous service in a combat zone or being wounded.
