An EXCELLENT example of a Second World War (1939-45) , United States Maritime Service Embroidered Shoulder Insignia. The U.S. Maritime Service was established in 1938 as a Voluntary Training Organization- for Officers & Crewmen of the United States Merchant Marine. The USMS performed a vital role during the Conflict, preparing members of the Merchant Marine for administrative and sailing experience that would be required when sailing under threat of German U-Boat Submarine warfare.
The United States Maritime Service was largely dissolved in 1954, but remains as a Maritime Training School for the U.S. Department of Transportation.
