These are re-strikes made with the original dies and tooling. The problem with these flashes is that the base metals are not always what they should be. On original flashes with a chromed base metal, they often appear ‘gold’ in colour, but this is due to the ageing effect of the sun on the lucite coating. The manufacturer of these re-strikes then had certain flashes made with a brass base so that they appear gold, and often had them made on chromed bases as well, calling them 1st and 2nd types, whereas there was only one. We are acquainted with somebody who has the “Art Cards” of 99% of SA’s flashes, medals and insignia, so should you have any questions on any item/s you see for sale anywhere, please feel free to contact us at [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If we are unable to assist you, we will put you in contact with somebody what will be able to help you. The reason for us bringing your attention to ‘re-strikes’ is that they do not appreciate in value as originals do, and if a unit only had 10 original flashes, the manufacturer of these re-strikes can have as many made as he feels fit. The only thing that re-strikes are good for is to be used as fillers, eg. Gatsrand Commando ONLY came in the black scorpion on the white background – beware of all the colour variations now available being called 1st type, 2nd type, 3rd type & 4th type.
