ABOUT THIS GEM: | BLUE SAPPHIRE |
Sapphire (Greek: sappheiros) refers to gem varieties of the mineral corundum, It is an extremely hard and durable gemstone. Sapphires are available in virtually all colors but red. Red Sapphires are known as Rubies. Sapphires were actually not known before the Roman Empire and prior to that time sapphiros referred to blue gems in general. Blue is the main colour of the sapphire.
Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, or chromium can give corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, or greenish color. Pink-orange corundum are also sapphires, but are instead called padparadscha.
Blue of the sapphire has become a colour which fits in with everything that is constant and reliable. That is one of the reasons why women in many countries wish for a sapphire ring on their engagement.
Sapphire can be found naturally and because of its remarkable hardness, sapphire is used in many applications, including infrared optical components, watch crystals, high-durability windows, and wafers for the deposition of semiconductors.
