After the Giulia Spider with Giulietta bodywork and the unfortunate experience of the Giulia Sprint GTC, the need to enrich the Giulia family with a new spider led to the birth, in 1966, of the Spider 1600. The line, supervised by Battista Pininfarina, had its roots in the Superflow concept car and was characterized by a tapered profile that earned it the nickname cuttlefish bone. The mechanics were that of the Giulia 1600: 4-cylinder in-line engine of 1570cc and 109 horsepower. The Spider 1600 was presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and was produced for just over a year in 6325 units, before being replaced by the 1750 Spider Veloce and the 1300 Spider
