The alexandrite variety (of chrysoberyl) displays a color change dependent upon the nature of ambient lighting. Alexandrite results from small scale replacement of aluminium by chromium ions in the crystal structure, which causes intense absorption of light over a narrow range of wavelengths in the yellow region (520-620) of the visible light spectrum. As one of the most expensive and rarest gemstones in the trade, laboratory grown Alexandrite like this one, is a fantastic option when looking at availability issues and cost of more than $60 000/ct for naturally minded Alexandrite weighing over 1.00ct
