1 Cent, South Africa, 1961 - KM# 57 (Mint State)

Description:

This coin is a 1 cent piece from South Africa, minted in 1961. It's in mint state, in uncirculated condition and retains its original lustre and detail.

Specifications:

  • Composition: Brass
  • Weight: 9.4 g
  • Diameter: 31 mm

Obverse Design:

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of Cape Town. He is depicted facing left. Around the portrait are the inscriptions "EENDRAG MAAK MAG" and "UNITY IS STRENGTH," separated by small asterisk-like symbols. These are Afrikaans and English versions of the South African motto at the time.

Significance:

This coin is significant as it was issued during a period of transition in South African history. The inclusion of both Afrikaans and English mottos reflects the bilingual nature of the country at the time. Jan van Riebeeck's image was commonly used on South African coinage during this era, symbolizing the country's early colonial history.

Collector's Notes:

In mint state, this coin would be highly desirable to collectors due to its excellent condition. The brass composition gives it a distinct golden appearance.
