The obverse is based on James Earle Fraser’s portrait of a Native American chieftain, modeled after the iconic Indian Head design of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel and it remains a popular coin among collectors and numismatists.. It’s believed that this design unites the facial features of three Native American chiefs: Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux. LIBERTY is also inscribed.
The reverse features the great buffalo, which gives the original coin its name, depicted standing on a mound. The round’s weight, purity, and metal content are also inscribed.
